North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano used to have his team practice cutting down the nets in anticipation of winning the NCAA basketball championship.
At the beginning of each season.
Jimmy V, who left us way too early, wanted people to feel what it was like to win the title. It made it easier for him to tell his players that if they wanted to feel this way at the end of the season, then this is what we (the team) have to do now to get there.
Three simple questions (OK, maybe not so simple) for today, just 22 days into a new year and two months before March Madness begins:
1. What constitutes “winning the title” in your business?
2. What would your net-cutting ceremony be like?
3. If you do decide to walk in Jimmy V’s shoes on this one, what would you tell your team that it’s going to take to get that big win?
P.S. This isn’t a bad exercise if you’re looking for a job or a sole-proprietor consultant. Think about who’s on your team (wife and kids? mentors? advisors?) and practice your celebration before discussing what it’s going to take to get there.
